Disturbing Case of Animal Abuse: Canton Man Charged After Dog Found Hung in the Basement

In a shocking revelation, a 29-year-old man from Canton has been indicted on multiple charges, including aggravated arson and cruelty to companion animals, following a disturbing investigation into animal abuse.

The Canton Police Department released body camera footage that captures the unsettling confession of the suspect, Bobby Lee Long. The incident unfolded shortly after Christmas, on December 26, when officers responded to reports of property damage at a duplex located at 1018 Troy Place NW.

Upon arrival, an officer observed shattered windows on the side of the home and proceeded to the front door, where she discovered that the window had also been broken. When Long emerged from the house, he appeared visibly agitated and confused. In the footage, he is seen placing his hands behind his back, seemingly anticipating arrest, and mumbling about the possibility of going to jail.

The exchange took a grim turn when Long revealed, “There’s a dead dog down in the basement,” to which the officer responded with disbelief. He further admitted, “And I caught the house on fire a few days ago.” Shortly after, the officer placed him in handcuffs, and Long continued to confess in the back of the police cruiser, acknowledging the extent of the damage he had caused.

Upon entering the residence, officers made a horrific discovery: a deceased dog hanging by a cord in the basement. In light of these events, a Stark County grand jury has indicted Long on three felony charges, including aggravated arson, attempted aggravated arson, and cruelty to companion animals. Notably, Long was already on probation for a previous domestic violence charge and is accused of attempting to set his home ablaze.

This case raises questions about the motivations behind such violent acts. Experts suggest that individuals who commit acts of animal cruelty may be grappling with underlying psychological issues, including anger management problems or a history of trauma. In some instances, these behaviors can also be a manifestation of a desire for control or power, particularly in individuals who may feel powerless in other areas of their lives.

Animal abuse is often seen as a precursor to other forms of violence, and it can be indicative of deeper emotional or mental health struggles. The disturbing nature of this case highlights the urgent need for intervention and support for those exhibiting violent behaviors, as well as the importance of protecting vulnerable animals from harm.

As the legal proceedings move forward, the community is left grappling with the implications of such a tragic incident, underscoring the need for awareness and prevention of animal cruelty in society.
