A Tale of Two Crashes: Restaurants Resilient in the Face of Tragedy

In recent weeks, two separate incidents involving vehicles crashing into local restaurants have shocked the communities of Jackson Township and Canton, Ohio. While one incident ended in tragedy with the loss of life, the other showcased resilience and determination of a beloved establishment to continue serving its patrons. The stories serve as a reminder of the unpredictability of life and the strength of community spirit.

On a seemingly normal Friday, tragedy struck at Angello’s 2 Go, located at 5081 Fulton Dr NW in Jackson Township. At around 11:55am, 81-year-old Barbara O’Donnell from Canal Fulton mistakenly accelerated instead of braking, causing her gray 2018 Toyota Rav-4 to crash into the restaurant. The impact was catastrophic, pinning 69-year-old Andrew Grosschmidt of Canton between the counter and the vehicle.

Emergency responders arrived promptly, managing to remove the car and transport Grosschmidt to Cleveland Clinic Mercy Medical Center. Despite the swift medical attention, Grosschmidt succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a devastated family and community. Reports indicate that his granddaughter was present during the accident but fortunately escaped unharmed.

The police are currently investigating the incident, with charges against O’Donnell pending. Fortunately, no other patrons or employees were injured in this unfortunate event. The tragedy has raised numerous questions about safety at local establishments, reminding us all the importance of vigilance, especially in busy areas.

In stark contrast, Taggart’s Ice Cream in Canton faced a different kind of challenge in September, when a motorist crashed a stolen vehicle into its dining room. The incident occurred on a Monday, resulting in significant damage to the restaurant, but thankfully, no injuries were reported.

The resilient owners of Taggart’s quickly took to social media to reassure their loyal patrons. “Great news! The building is intact!” they posted on Facebook, announcing that they would continue operating for carryout orders while assessing the damage. Their commitment to the community was evident as they vowed to keep the kitchen open from 11a.m. to 10pm daily, ensuring that customers would still have access to their favorite ice cream treats.

As restoration efforts began, owner Mullaly expressed her determination to preserve the restaurant’s character. She revealed that at least seven booths and several tables had been ruined in the crash, but she hoped to salvage pieces of furniture that bore personal carvings from patrons. “I know everyone’s concerned about the tabletops with all of the initials in them,” Mullaly stated. “We’re saving those as much as we can, If I cant use them as a table, I’m going to use them for something in the store as display or something. But they’re not going anywhere.”

Despite the heartbreak of losing the original booths built by a former owner, Mullaly remains optimistic. She plans to reconstruct them to match the old design, maintaining the restaurant’s nostalgic appeal. The insurance company has been supportive, aiming to expedite the restoration process so that Taggart’s can return to full service as soon as possible.

Both incidents have elicited strong responses from the community. The tragic loss at Angello’s 2 Go has sparked conversations about safety in public spaces, while Taggart’s Ice Cream has received an outpouring of love and support from its patrons. Comments on social media reflect the deep emotional ties individuals have to the ice cream shop, with many sharing personal stories of memories made within its walls.

While the two stories present a stark contrast in outcomes, they highlight the resilience of communities in the face of adversity. Taggart’s Ice Cream embodies the spirit of perseverance, while the tragedy at Angello’s serves as a sobering reminder of the fragility of life. Both restaurants, emblematic of their communities, showcase the importance of support, love and togetherness during challenging times.

As both establishments navigate the aftermath of their respective incidents, one thing remains clear: the bonds formed within these communities will continue to strengthen, ensuring what memories and legacies endure. Whether through mourning a loss or celebrating resilience, the stories of Angello’s 2 Go and Taggart’s Ice Cream remind us all of the profound impact local businesses have on our lives and the importance of supporting one another in times of need.
